A Doughnut Blog

Months ago we made our first trip out to Yo Yo Donuts and Coffee Bar out in Minnetonka.  We thoroughly enjoyed our artistically frothed espresso drinks and the fun doughnut selection they had that wintry afternoon.  Unfortunately, that late in the day, the bakery had already run out of their signature doughnut -- the Maple Bacon Long John.  Since we'd heard so much about it, we knew we had to go back and try this curious pastry.

Time went by, school became busier, and our trip was put on the back burner.  Eventually, Yoon-Hee passed along an article from vita.mn that reminded us of our endeavor.  So finally, last weekend we made it out.

Again, our mochas were very pretty.

We also decided to get a few fun treats -- Dirt and Worms and Coco Puffs doughnuts.  I'm sure you can figure out which is which.

And last but not least, a Red Velvet doughnut and the long john we'd been waiting for...

After all the hype and anticipation, I'm sad to say that both Mike and I were a bit perplexed and disappointed by our first, second, third, last bites.  The maple glaze on the long john was overwhelmingly sweet.  The 100% applewood smoked bacon worked in that the salt and smokiness cut through the glaze -- we wanted more bacon, not because it was bacon, but because we needed something to balance out the sweetness.  Otherwise it tasted a bit odd to us.  Maybe it's because we're not huge doughnut connoisseurs, or maybe neither of us have huge sweet tooths.  In any case, we were glad we tried it for the experience, but next time we'll stick to the goofy cake and yeast-raised doughnuts or their fritters.
